Famous people were tweeting it, the Atlantic Magazine did a feature on it and a major Los Angeles news website named it their favorite video of the year. ”What happened was that it went completely viral over the holidays and got up to 10,000 views. But, since interested people were commenting on how much they liked it, I decided, well, why not leave it? Let’s just see what happens. ”Since there’s a way to see where views are coming from, I figured out somebody who had a blog about letterpress had somehow found the video and posted it. And I thought, geez, how many times are they watching it?” So, after I got home, I checked to see how many times they’d viewed it, and (from one day to the next) it suddenly went from zero to 50 views. ”I told them not to send it to anybody because the school doesn’t approve of students sharing their films online.
I titled it “ink&paper,” the class liked it, I got a good grade on it, and that was that.”īefore going home to Halifax, Nova Scotia for Christmas that year, he uploaded the video to the Internet so his subjects could see the film. ”They agreed, so I shot for one day at the letterpress, one day at the paper store, edited it together in a week, got my friend to do some music and showed it in class. So, I asked the owners if I could film what they do in a short documentary for my USC class,” Proudfoot said. ”I was fascinated by both this century-old family printing business and the vintage paper shop right next door. ”I’ve always been fascinated with the old, hands-on technique of letterpress, so I went to get my letterhead printed at a famous, local letterpress place in Los Angeles, Aardvark Letterpress. To me, the Day of the Dead will always be very inspiring to me because of the long lineage of other Mexican and Chicanx artists that have also created work inspired by the Indigenous tradition of Dia De Los Muertos. I have been creating work for about 15 years and I remember distinctly that when we created the original Obey Skull and then later on I went and made my own solo Ganas version that those two graphics gave me lots of confidence and inspired me into creating more work and initiate the body of work that I have today. I decided to call my friends over at Aardvark letterpress and run two editions for me, the Obey Day of the Dead Calavera which was originally released in 2008 and the Ganas Day of the Dead Calavera which was originally released in 2011. “I wanted to make a special release for my 35th birthday.
